Quick summary: Albert Einstein’s genius came with a famously absent mind, he once searched for a train ticket he couldn’t find, forgot his own home address, and rarely bothered dressing up for anyone. These small, human moments sit alongside a career that included a Nobel Prize, an early rejected doctoral application, and a mind later celebrated as the greatest of the 20th century.

Einstein’s Genius and the Nobel Prize
Sir Albert Einstein is, without question, the greatest genius the 20th century produced. He is regarded as the father of modern physics, having given the world the theory of relativity and the mass-energy equivalence formula (E = mc²).
In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contribution to physics and his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.
The Uniqueness of His Brain

Researchers say that while an average person uses only about 10% of their brain, Einstein used between 30-39% of his. This is said to be second only to the mental capacity of the Buddha, the greatest teacher the universe has produced.
This world-renowned professor was so deeply focused on his research and discoveries that he developed a habit of frequently forgetting things in his everyday life.
The Story of the Forgotten Train Ticket
Once, Sir Einstein was traveling by train from Princeton University. During the journey, the ticket inspector came by checking tickets and approached the great genius. The professor reached into his coat pocket looking for his ticket. It wasn’t there. He checked his trouser pocket. Not there either. He checked his suitcase. He checked the seat he was sitting on. His ticket was nowhere to be found.
Seeing this, the inspector said to Sir Einstein:
“Professor, I know who you are. The whole country knows who you are. I’m sure you bought a ticket. There’s no need to worry.”
The professor smiled at him warmly. The inspector went on to check other passengers, but before moving to the next carriage, he turned back to look at the professor, who was now on his knees, searching for his ticket under the seat.
he inspector hurried back to him and said,
“Professor, professor, please don’t worry. I know who you are. We know for certain you bought a ticket. You don’t need to find it.”
Sir Einstein looked at the young man and gave a wonderful reply:
“Son, I too know who I am. What I don’t know is where I’m going. That’s why I’m looking for this ticket…”
The Time He Forgot His Home Address
On another occasion, he was traveling home from Princeton University by taxi. He forgot his own home address.
Since the taxi driver didn’t seem to recognize him, Einstein asked the driver,
“Do you know where Einstein’s house is?”
“Is there anyone who doesn’t know his address? Everyone in Princeton knows where he lives. Do you need to meet him?”
the driver replied.
The professor then explained that he himself was Einstein, and that he had forgotten his own home address.
Not only did the driver take the professor home, he refused to charge this great genius any fare at all.

His Indifference to Clothing
Most people who reach a certain understanding of life grow accustomed to simple habits. Sir Albert Einstein was never a man who paid unnecessary attention to his clothing or appearance.
His wife would often suggest that he dress properly before going to his workplace.
The professor’s question was always:
“What for?”
“Because people who know you well will be there…”
his wife would explain.
Time passed. The professor was preparing to attend a well known conference his first public conference.
“Please dress nicely and properly today too,”
his wife told him.
Recalling that his wife had once told him to dress well because people who knew him would be at his workplace, the professor gave her a wonderfully logical reply:
“What for? There’s no one there who knows me…”
On another day, Sir Einstein was walking in a park. Suddenly it began to rain. The professor quickly took the hat off his head and put it in his pocket.
Someone nearby asked him about this.
The professor, as always, gave a clever answer:
“If my hat gets wet in the rain, it might get ruined. But if my head gets wet, nothing happens to my brain.”
While most scientists build their theories through various instruments, experiments, observation, and conclusions, Sir Albert Einstein presented his theories largely through intuition and imagination. This is precisely why even modern scientists today still struggle to fully grasp some of his discoveries.
The Rejected Ph.D. Thesis

In 1907, the University of Bern rejected Einstein’s application for a doctorate, not because his theories were dismissed, but because he hadn’t submitted a required habilitation thesis. He completed it the following year and was given a lecturer position at the university. (Note: a widely shared “rejection letter” image claiming to be from this event is a well documented fabrication, not an authentic document.)
Yet, roughly a decade later, the very man who had once been rejected came to be honored by the entire world as “the greatest genius of the 20th century,” while his thesis, and the reviewers who rejected it, faded quietly into the sands of time.
This stands as a fine example of how people who think differently, act differently, and are unconventional may face ridicule from society in their time, but the universe eventually lifts them into the place they truly deserve.

Albert Einstein:

Frequently Asked Questions
Einstein was so deeply absorbed in his research and ideas that he frequently forgot everyday things, including his train ticket, his own home address, and basic routines most people take for granted.
While traveling by train from Princeton, Einstein couldn’t find his ticket when the inspector came by. The inspector told him not to worry since everyone knew who he was, but Einstein kept searching anyway, explaining that his real problem wasn’t proving who he was, it was remembering where he was going.
Yes. On one occasion, Einstein took a taxi from Princeton University and couldn’t remember his home address, so he asked the driver if he knew where “Einstein” lived, not realizing the driver didn’t recognize him as Einstein himself.
In 1907, a university academic board rejected Einstein’s doctoral thesis. Roughly a decade later, he was being celebrated worldwide as the greatest genius of the 20th century.
