Remarkably, the two shared the exact same birthday: April 20.
A Shared Birthday and an Unlikely Friendship
In the spring of 1933, young Bernile and her widowed mother traveled from their home in Munich to where Hitler was staying, joining crowds who had gathered to celebrate his birthday. When it was discovered that little Rosa Bernile shared his birthday, she was given a personal audience with Hitler, and she began calling him “Uncle Hitler.” She later became known as “the Führer’s child.”

The photograph from that meeting is credited to Heinrich Hoffmann, Hitler’s personal photographer.
Hitler later had a copy of the photograph inscribed in his own hand, reading, “The dear and [considerate?] Rosa Nienau, Adolf Hitler, Munich, the 16th of June, 1933,” and sent it to young Bernile.
Their unusual friendship lasted around five years, until 1938. During that time, they met on several occasions, and Bernile exchanged letters 17 times with Hitler and his aide, Wilhelm Brückner.
A Friendship Nazi Law Made Impossible
Because Bernile’s grandmother was Jewish, under the Nazi racial laws of the time, she was classified as Jewish as well, despite having been raised Catholic.

The Order That Ended It
Once Hitler’s followers learned of the girl’s Jewish heritage, his personal secretary, Martin Bormann, ordered that she and her mother be barred from further contact with Hitler, and they made sure to keep this ban hidden from Hitler himself.
Some time later, wondering what had happened to his favorite young friend, Hitler learned the truth and was deeply upset, growing furious with those who had shunned his little friend.
Speaking to his personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann about the matter, Hitler reportedly said, “There are some people who have a talented genius for spoiling all my little pleasures.”
Her Death, and a Photograph Sold Decades Later
Five years later, on October 5, 1943, young Bernile died of polio at a hospital in Munich. She was 17, and it had been ten years since her first meeting with Hitler.
The photograph was sold at Alexander Historical Auctions in Maryland in 2018 for $10,000 (£7,500).
A year after Martin Bormann ended the relationship between Hitler and young Bernile, the Second World War began. Six years later, by its end, roughly six million Jews had been murdered.
Like Nikola Tesla’s erased legacy, Rosa Bernile Nienau’s story is one history remembers only in fragments, an ordinary child’s life pulled briefly into the machinery of an extraordinary evil.
