Quick summary: Nikola Tesla worked in Thomas Edison’s laboratory and fixed critical flaws in his DC generators, only for Edison to break a promised $50,000 payment. That betrayal pushed Tesla to build his own lab and introduce alternating current (AC), a technology Edison tried to discredit by publicly electrocuting animals. Tesla went on to build the world’s first hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls and laid the groundwork for radio, radar, and wireless power, most of it credited to others while he died broke and alone in 1943.

Nikola Tesla: The Child Born from Lightning, History’s Greatest Scientist

Nikola Tesla introduced the world to alternating current (AC) while working in Thomas Edison’s laboratory, then broke away to build his own lab after a bitter falling-out with Edison, eventually constructing the world’s first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls. Though he is the true originator of many foundational modern technologies, including wireless communication, radar, and early X-ray experiments, he died alone in a New York hotel room in 1943, broke and largely uncredited.

Meeting Thomas Edison

One day in 1884, a young Austrian citizen of Serbian descent arrived to meet Thomas Alva Edison.

He came carrying a letter written by his former employer, Charles Batchelor, which read:

“I know two great men, and you are one of them. The other is the young man who’s bringing you this letter.”

That young man was none other than the great inventor and scientist Nikola Tesla.

Birth and Childhood in Serbia

Born at the stroke of midnight during a thunderstorm on June 10, 1856, in the village of Smiljan in the Lika region near the Austrian border, in a Serbian family, Nikola Tesla was known as “the child born from lightning.”

He was the fourth of five children, with three sisters (Milka, Angelina, and Marica) and one brother. Tragically, when Tesla was five years old, his brother Dane died after falling from a horse-drawn carriage.

In 1861, Tesla attended a primary school in Smiljan, where he studied German, mathematics, and religion.

From a Priesthood Ambition to Engineering

Since his father was a priest, it was his father’s hope that Tesla would one day become a priest too. But young Tesla, having seen the various tools his mother used to make housework easier, felt drawn instead to studying technology.

His father was reluctant to support this path. At one point, Tesla fell seriously ill with cholera. He convinced his father to let him become an engineer by promising he would recover quickly from the illness. In the end, not only did his father agree to let him pursue engineering, but he also promised to help Tesla get into a suitable university.

One day, after noticing the small static electric charge that came from petting his cat’s fur, Tesla decided he needed to learn about electricity.

He began studying electrical engineering but never completed his degree. The exact reason remains unclear, but one of the most consequential decisions of his life was his choice to emigrate to America.

Arriving in America and Joining Edison’s Laboratory

He arrived in America with little more than a few changes of clothes, a small amount of money, and a letter of introduction.

He went to work at the laboratory of the man considered, at the time, the greatest scientist alive: Thomas Alva Edison.

At that time, Edison was developing and selling direct current (DC) electricity, a system that required a power station roughly every square mile, thick cables for transmission, and came with high fire risk and expensive repair costs when systems were damaged. Despite these drawbacks, Edison was making enormous profits from the business.

The Broken Promise: Tesla Against Edison

Recognizing that Tesla was far more capable than himself, Edison assigned him one final major project: fixing the flaws in his DC generators and motors.

Edison promised Tesla $50,000 for completing the work. When Tesla, working day and night, finished the task and delivered it, Edison refused to pay, reportedly telling him, “Tesla, you don’t understand our American humor.”

His Own Laboratory and the Rise of AC Power

Deeply disillusioned by this betrayal, Tesla started his own laboratory with financial backing from J.P. Morgan and George Westinghouse. Since Edison’s direct current (DC) system was extremely expensive to operate, Tesla introduced the world to an alternative: alternating current (AC). He later built the world’s first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls, at a time when the world had barely any concept of hydroelectric power.

Because a single AC power station could serve a much larger area, with no significant power loss, greater safety, and lower production, maintenance, and distribution costs, alternating current remains the standard the entire world uses today.

Tesla patented this technology but later sold the patent rights to George Westinghouse for $1 million, money he then poured almost entirely back into funding his own further inventions.

The War of Currents

Since Tesla’s introduction of alternating current (AC) directly threatened Edison’s highly profitable DC business, Edison responded by publicly electrocuting several animals, including a horse and an elephant, using AC current, in an effort to portray it as dangerous.

Edison also proposed using alternating current to power the electric chair for capital punishment.

But Tesla, cleverer than Edison in this instance, demonstrated the safety of his technology by wearing a suit built like a Faraday cage and passing an enormous electric current through his own body.

Refusing to accept this defeat, Edison had Tesla’s laboratory set on fire, destroying his notes and research. Yet the singular, extraordinary mind of Nikola Tesla was not something these tactics could ultimately defeat.

Tesla’s Extraordinary Mind

Nikola Tesla could speak eight languages: Serbian, English, Czech, German, French, Hungarian, Italian, and Latin. He also possessed a memory so precise that after reading a book only once, he could reproduce it word for word. He was capable of designing extraordinarily complex three-dimensional structures entirely in his mind, with 100% accuracy, without ever putting a single note on paper.

The World’s Fair and the Invention of Fluorescent Lighting

Around this time, America was preparing to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival with the World’s Columbian Exposition. A tender was issued for lighting the event, and both Tesla and Edison competed for the contract.

Tesla’s company won the bid, since his direct-current-free lighting solution cost only about half of what Edison’s DC-based lighting would have required. Furious, Edison then blocked Tesla from using the incandescent light bulb, since Edison held the patent for it. Undeterred, Tesla responded by introducing a clever alternative: the gas-discharge lamp, an early concept behind the modern fluorescent bulb (CFL). This is what made Nikola Tesla world-famous, and it also marked the first time electric lighting had ever been used on such a scale.

The Niagara Falls Hydroelectric Plant

Recognizing Tesla’s remarkable ability and success, the commission overseeing Niagara Falls granted him permission to attempt generating alternating current using the power of the falls. Since the nearest city where the power could be used, Buffalo, was roughly 20 miles from the falls, direct current transmission simply wasn’t practical over that distance, which gave Tesla’s AC experiments a decisive advantage in the competition.

This became the world’s first hydroelectric power plant, and a statue honoring Tesla’s achievement still stands near Niagara Falls today.

Radio’s True Inventor

While the world generally credits Guglielmo Marconi with inventing radio, it was in fact Tesla’s discoveries and 17 of his patents that were used to send the world’s first radio transmission.

Marconi received the Nobel Prize for this, but very few people know that the true inventor was Nikola Tesla. Taking apart Marconi’s radio reveals Tesla coils and transistor components that confirm this.

Tesla himself once remarked: “Marconi is a good fellow. Let him continue. He is using seventeen of my patents.”

In 1943, six months after Tesla’s death, a court ruling formally credited Tesla with the invention of radio, though most of the world remains unaware of this even today.

The Remote Control, Radar, and X-Ray Experiments

In 1898, Tesla invented the remote control. From modern television remotes to satellite technology, much of what we use today traces back to this invention.

In 1917, Tesla introduced another concept: determining an object’s speed and location by reflecting radio waves off it, an idea intended for defense applications. However, Edison, who at the time held a position connected to the Navy, blocked Tesla from pursuing it.

Seventeen years later, Robert Watson-Watt is credited with inventing “radar,” though many argue that credit rightly belongs to Tesla.

Eight years before Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays, Tesla had already been conducting experiments using X-rays, though this, like several of his other discoveries, emerged only as a byproduct of his broader research.

Wireless Electricity and the Tesla Coil

The Tesla coil, used for wireless energy transmission, is another of his remarkable inventions. It emerged as a byproduct of his broader plans to transmit electricity through space, much like radio waves.

Tesla demonstrated that electricity transmitted wirelessly through space could be received by a simple receiver, such as a light bulb, without any wiring at all. Remarkably, if someone stood within range of a Tesla coil’s transmission holding a light bulb in their bare hand, the bulb would light up without harming the person, one of the most astonishing qualities of the concept.

Wardenclyffe Tower: A Dream Ahead of Its Time

When Tesla traveled to Colorado to conduct these experiments, locals reportedly thought he was a madman meddling with forces belonging to the divine. Upon returning to New York, Tesla’s vision was to build a massive tower, the Wardenclyffe Tower, capable of transmitting electricity, music, and radio waves to the entire world.

He secured funding for this from the financier J.P. Morgan. But midway through construction, Guglielmo Marconi successfully transmitted a radio signal of his own, leading Morgan to withdraw his support, believing further investment in Tesla’s project was no longer worthwhile.

Ideas Ahead of Their Time: Renewable Energy

The fact that Tesla’s plan was about far more than radio transmission was something the world failed to grasp at the time, a loss for everyone. Anticipating a future energy crisis stemming from finite resources like oil and coal, Tesla introduced the concept of radiant energy and began developing solar cells to harness the sun’s virtually limitless energy.

A Lonely Death and a Forgotten Legacy

Investors, realizing there was no profit to be made in giving people free electricity, eventually abandoned Tesla entirely. Yet he continued to work tirelessly, even as he sank into debt, striving to bring benefit to the world. A man who held deep affection for birds and animals of all kinds, this great inventor died alone and destitute, unmarried, in a hotel room in 1943 at the age of 86.

Hotel staff did not discover his death until two days later. The U.S. government moved quickly to seize all of his papers and research files, reportedly concerned that some of his experiments could prove extremely dangerous if they fell into the wrong hands.

While others received praise and credit for discoveries that were rightfully his, Tesla bore it all quietly, seeking nothing in return, and continued to devote his money and time to bringing more wonders to the world, a true friend to humanity.

Honors and a Lasting Legacy

In honor of Nikola Tesla, the General Conference on Weights and Measures named the SI unit of magnetic flux density the “tesla.” July 10th is also recognized as a day named in his honor.

Nikola Tesla’s Remarkable Inventions

  • The remote control
  • Wireless communication
  • Neon lighting
  • Fluorescent lighting (tube lights)
  • The AC motor (used in everything from blender fans and air conditioners to massive industrial machinery)
  • A floating platform that moves along a magnetic field
  • Wireless electricity transmission
  • Foundational discoveries related to the transistor
  • Early experiments in cryogenic engineering, over 100 years ahead of his time, a field still being actively researched today
  • The first scientist to record radio waves originating from outer space
  • Designer of a device capable of producing localized mechanical resonance. During his experiments, vibrations were reportedly felt across parts of New York City, an idea that has since fueled speculative, scientifically unverified claims connecting it to modern technologies like HAARP
  • The scientist who discovered the Earth’s resonant frequency (a figure it took the rest of the scientific world another 50 years to confirm)
  • Though scientists still can’t fully explain how ball lightning forms, Tesla is credited with creating it artificially as early as the 1890s

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Nikola Tesla introduce alternating current (AC)?

Thomas Edison’s direct current (DC) system was expensive and inefficient over long distances, so Tesla introduced alternating current as a cheaper, safer alternative that could serve much larger areas from a single power station.

Why did Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla become rivals?

Edison refused to pay Tesla the $50,000 he’d promised for fixing his DC generators, and later publicly electrocuted animals with AC current to try to convince the public it was dangerous, deepening the rift between them.

Did Marconi or Tesla really invent radio?

Guglielmo Marconi is popularly credited with inventing radio, but he used 17 of Tesla’s patents to do it. In 1943, six months after Tesla’s death, the US Supreme Court formally ruled that Tesla held the original radio patent.

How did Nikola Tesla die?

Tesla died alone in a New York hotel room in 1943 at age 86, in debt and largely uncredited for his work. Hotel staff didn’t discover his death until two days later.
