Located 120 miles east of Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon West Skywalk is a glass and steel bridge that stretches out over the rim, 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. In comparison, the 102nd-floor observation deck at the Empire State Building is a mere 1,224 feet high. The view afforded is undeniable. Below the mesas, an impressive labyrinth of jagged red, gold, and ochre cliffs reveals eons’ worth of erosion by the Colorado River. But the real thrill here is looking straight down between your feet and realizing that 4 inches of glass is all that separates you from almost a mile of uninterrupted air. Anchored to the top of the cliff and extending 70 feet from the rim, the seemingly unsupported horseshoe-shaped bridge is a wonder of design.
The structure was built to bear the weight of 71 fully loaded Boeing 747s (although only 120 people are permitted at a time, to maximize the visitor experience) and can withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake.
The Skywalk is the brainchild of Las Vegas entrepreneur David Jin and the Hualapai tribe, who are hoping the $50 million bridge will draw visitors to Grand Canyon West, the overlooked and underappreciated natural wonder they call home
The Skywalk facility will also include a 6,000 square-foot visitor’s center on three levels – underground, first story and second story – which will contain a museum, movie theater, VIP lounge, gift shop, and several restaurants and bars, including a high-end restaurant called The Skywalk Café that will offer outdoor patio and rooftop seating on the edge of the canyon. The second story will be where visitors can access The Skywalk glass walkway. The visitor’s center will also offer private indoor and outdoor facilities for meetings, special events and weddings.
